Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist

Job Type: Full-Time

The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing routine and special laboratory testing. Other responsibilities include working closely with all hospital departments and external clients referring their lab work to this facility to ensure that testing is performed efficiently and accurately. The incumbent is required to assist with phlebotomy, clerical and specimen-processing duties as needed in an efficient and professional manner. This position has exposure to body fluids and communicable disease. On duty hours consist of time spent both sitting and standing. Up to 60% of this time can be spent standing and moving from station to station within the lab. Manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity is required for job performance. The Technologist must be able to determine color variations. Verbal and auditory acuity to both communicate and receive test information via telephone is also required. Occasional lifting and/or pushing of up to 40 lb. is required. The incumbent must also be capable of identifying and documenting problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and be able to either correct the problem or immediately notify the general supervisor, department director or medical director.


LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED ASCP, AMT or equivalent credential


EDUCATIONAL AND SKILL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION The Medical Laboratory Scientist is required to possess familiarity with laboratory testing procedures as demonstrated by earning a bachelor or associate degree in a chemical, physical or biological science; completion of a clinical internship from an accredited institution; and possession of a credential from a national registry (such as ASCP or AMT) as a medical technologist or medical laboratory technician.
