RN Nurse Educator/Infection Control Coordinator

Job Description

Performs and coordinates infectious disease surveillance activities as directed by the Infection Control Committee and as indicated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). The Clinical Educator integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based principles, and clinical nursing expertise into educational experiences for both new employees and experienced staff. Implements Inova programs for staff to achieve patient care and outcome standards, such as core measures, magnet standards, and patient satisfaction. Utilizes system strategies and tools to assess competence of new nursing staff members, focusing on quality of care and patient safety goals. Shares responsibility for the quality and safety of patient care. Contributes to quality and safety initiatives across the organization. Seeks opportunities for departmental improvement. Consistently applies Lean thinking to departmental operations to enhance services. Demonstrates and orientation toward achievement and professional growth of self and others. Prepares annual self-development plan, sets professional goals, and seeks opportunities for achieving them.

Essential Functions:

The Infection Control Practitioner responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

* Facilitation of the Infection Control Committee meetings.

* Communicates Infection Prevention regulations and regulatory standards to all appropriate personnel.

* Assists in the analysis of surveillance data to identify trends in rates, pathogens, and antimicrobial resistance.

* Assists in the development of surveillance and analysis methods that permit timely recognition and communication of infection problems.

* Reports those diseases and/or conditions that are reportable by law to state and local health departments and interacts with the public health department to respond to inquiries as necessary (e.g., reporting of communicable diseases, healthcare worker exposure, etc).

* Maintains a knowledge base of current infection prevention information through continuing education, published literature, internet access and professional organizations.

* Performs ongoing infection prevention surveillance activities. This includes data analysis and development of strategies for improving healthcare outcomes.

* Performs data collection to include population at risk, device specific infection rates and infection rates by risk index.

* Performs analysis of surveillance data to identify trends in rates, pathogens, and antimicrobial resistance.

* Reviews implementation of appropriate precautions to reduce hospital acquired infections (i.e. ordering of isolation and compliance, review of process and outcome measures).

* Evaluates patient care environments for infection control practices and hazards through environmental and targeted unit rounds.

* Collaborates with Environment Of Care Team through conducting of environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas, as well as construction rounds during active construction projects. Documents findings and partners with manager/director on corrective actions.

* Maintains the employee health needs for the facility as well as oversees the employee health files.

* Oversees the education requirements of the facility, maintaining employee education files.

* Coordinates with each department to assure all education is completed and turned back in for education files.

* Leads mock education a minimum of monthly Qshift, in coordination with the Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Pharmacy.

* May have to work the floor if indicated due to low staffing.

Accountability:

Reports to the Chief Nursing Officer with an indirect reporting relationship to the Director of QAPI.

Required Physical Demands (Subject to Reasonable Accommodation): work in a high paced environment and stand for hours at a time when indicated.

Keyboarding/Dexterity: Frequently; activity exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time Standing/Walking: Occasionally; activity exists up to 1/3 of the time Strength (Lift/Carry/Push/Pull): Must be able to lift 30-40 lbs;

Environmental Conditions:

Potential for exposure to human specimens, urine, blood and body fluids/secretions, communicable diseases, and needles. Must follow standard precautions.

Requirements

* Three years progressive experience in Nursing/Clinical Specialty and in Nursing/Clinical Education.
* Master's Degree Master's Degree in Nursing, Health Care, Education and/or other relevant field (preferred).
* National Certification in Specialty, BLS certification.
* Licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Arkansas as a Registered Nurse.
