North Metro’s Cardiopulmonary Department is a multifaceted department with a focus on the care of patients with lung and heart disease. Those patients include diagnosis of chronic lung problems, such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema, but they also include heart attack and accident victims, premature infants and people with lung cancer or AIDS.

In each of these cases, the patient will receive treatment from a Respiratory Therapist under the direction of a physician. Respiratory Therapists work to evaluate, treat and care for people with breathing disorders. They also perform procedures that provide both diagnosis and treatment. Some of these activities include:
  • Pulmonary Function Testing: Measurement of a person's lung capacity to determine if there is impaired function.
  • Bronchoscopy: Invasive procedure for diagnosis of lung dysfunction, disease, and/or cancer.
  • Electrocardiograms (EKG): Test to detect irregular heart rhythms, heart damage, or baseline prior to surgery.
  • Holter Monitoring: 24 hour heart monitor utilized to detect irregular heart rhythms.
  • Arterial Segmental Dopplers: Assess circulation in the legs and/or arms.
  • Electroencephalograms (EEG): Test to measure electrical activity of the brain.
  • Arterial Blood Gas: Blood sample to measure levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases.

These test are generally scheduled by your physician on an outpatient basis.

Respiratory therapists are a vital part of the hospital's lifesaving response team, treating patients with acute and chronic lung disorders with oxygen, aerosolized brochodilator therapy, and assisted ventilation.

North Metro Medical Center has two levels of Respiratory Therapist: Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Therapists are staffed seven days a week, around the clock for continuum of care.
